This question comes up constantly, and the honest answer is “it depends on how urgently you need results and how much runway you have” – which isn’t satisfying, but it’s the real deciding factor. Here’s how to actually work out which one fits your situation.

The core trade-off

Google Ads gets you in front of people searching right now, at a cost per click you control, with results visible within days. SEO is slower to build – often three to six months before meaningful movement – but the traffic doesn’t stop the moment you stop paying for it, the way ads do.

When Google Ads makes more sense first

  • You need leads now and can’t wait months for organic rankings to build.
  • You’re testing a new offer or market and want fast data on what converts before committing to content.
  • Your industry has high commercial intent keywords where ranking organically is genuinely difficult in the short term.

When SEO makes more sense first

  • You’re building for the next few years, not the next few weeks.
  • Your budget for ongoing ad spend is limited or unpredictable.
  • Your competitors are weak organically even if they’re active on ads – an easier opportunity than it looks.

The case for doing both, deliberately

A lot of businesses end up running both, and it’s not indecision – ads and organic listings both appearing for the same search increases the overall click share you capture, and ads data (which exact terms actually convert) is genuinely useful for prioritising SEO content. The mistake is running both without a plan for when to scale ad spend back as organic traffic grows.

What we’d actually recommend

If cash flow allows it, start SEO early because of the lag before it pays off, and use Google Ads in parallel for anything time-sensitive or for validating which offers and pages actually convert before you invest in writing more content around them.
