Picking a web design agency is difficult precisely because most agencies look the same from the outside – a portfolio, some testimonials, a pricing page. The differences that actually matter tend to show up after you’ve signed, which is exactly when they’re most expensive to discover. Here’s what to check before that point.

Do you actually own what they build?

Ask directly: do you own the domain, the hosting account, and full admin access to the CMS? Some agencies build on infrastructure they control and make it awkward – not impossible, just awkward and often costly – to leave. A straight answer to this question tells you a lot about how they operate.

What happens after launch?

A website is not a one-off deliverable, it’s something that needs maintaining – security updates, plugin updates, backups, and someone to call when something breaks. Ask what the agency’s post-launch relationship actually looks like, and get specifics rather than “we’re always here if you need us.”

Process, not just portfolio

A strong portfolio shows you outcomes. It doesn’t show you how chaotic or organised the process was to get there. Ask how they run discovery, how many revision rounds are included, how they handle scope changes, and what a typical timeline looks like. Vague answers here are a preview of what the project itself will feel like.

Do they build for your goals, or just for design?

A beautiful site that doesn’t rank, doesn’t convert, and doesn’t load quickly on a phone in poor signal isn’t doing its job. Ask how SEO, page speed and conversion are handled – not as an afterthought, but as part of the actual build process from day one.

Local knowledge is a genuine advantage, not just a nice-to-have

An agency that already understands your local market – who your customers are, who you’re actually competing against locally, what’s worked for similar businesses nearby – starts several steps ahead of one learning your market from scratch on your budget.

Red flags worth taking seriously

  • Pressure to sign quickly, or pricing that seems designed to avoid direct comparison.
  • No clear answer on who owns the finished site.
  • A portfolio with no live, working links you can actually test yourself.
  • No mention of SEO, performance or accessibility until you ask.
